What is Virtualization (Hypervisor) In Azure DevOps?

In Azure DevOps, Virtualization, specifically referring to the concept of a hypervisor, is a technology that enables the creation and management of virtual instances or environments on a single physical machine. The hypervisor, also known as a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM), is a software layer that abstracts and virtualizes the underlying hardware, allowing multiple operating systems (OS) to run concurrently on the same physical server. -Azure DevOps Training Online

There are two types of hypervisors:

Type 1 Hypervisor (Bare-Metal Hypervisor):

Installed directly on the physical hardware.

Manages the virtual machines and their interactions with the hardware.

Examples include VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V Server, and KVM.

Type 2 Hypervisor (Hosted Hypervisor):

Installed on top of an existing operating system.  -Azure DevOps Training Online

Relies on the host OS to manage hardware resources.

Examples include VMware Workstation, Oracle VirtualBox, and Microsoft Hyper-V (when installed on a Windows OS).

Key Functions of a Hypervisor:

Resource Allocation: Allocates and manages physical resources such as CPU, memory, storage, and network bandwidth among virtual machines. -Azure DevOps Course Online

Isolation: Ensures isolation between virtual machines, preventing interference or conflicts between different operating systems or applications.

Virtual Machine Creation and Management: Creates and manages virtual machines, enabling the simultaneous operation of multiple OS instances on a single physical server.

Resource Optimization: Optimizes resource utilization by dynamically allocating or deallocating resources based on the workload of virtual machines. -Azure DevOps Training

Snapshot and Cloning: Supports the creation of snapshots for backup and recovery purposes, allowing users to capture the state of a virtual machine at a specific point in time. Cloning enables the rapid replication of virtual machines. -Azure DevOps Training in Ameerpet

Benefits of Virtualization:

Server Consolidation: Efficiently utilizes hardware resources by running multiple virtual machines on a single physical server.

Cost Savings: Reduces hardware costs, energy consumption, and space requirements by consolidating workloads.

Flexibility and Scalability: Enables easy scaling of IT infrastructure by quickly provisioning new virtual machines as needed.

Isolation and Security: Enhances security by isolating virtual machines from each other, preventing potential security breaches. -Microsoft Azure DevOps Online Training

Ease of Management: Virtualization, especially through hypervisors, has become a foundational technology in data centers and cloud computing, providing the agility and efficiency required for modern IT infrastructures.
